All art courses include the study of: art history, aesthetics in art, art criticism, and the development of skills/production of art.
The Visual Art courses available at East Jackson Comprehensive High School are:
Art I-II
This is an overview and foundational art course that includes traditional instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, collage, mixed media, and architecture. Artists, art periods, and styles are studied through research, replication art projects, and class room presentations to develop speaking skills.
The purpose of these courses is to enable students to communicate ideas and concepts through two and three-dimensional design and composition, and develop an appreciation for exemplars in varied cultures and historical periods.
Drawing & Painting I-III
These three courses develop skills and opportunities through drawing and painting. Most of the assignments are open-ended and designed to encourage individual problem solving skills, visual development, and higher level thinking through art exploration and creation. Art competitions, poster/advertising projects, theme-based art projects, as well as skill development projects are the central in these courses. Students also research and study a timeline of art as a form of expression, historical and cultural record, and observe the use of a wide variety of media from an historical perspective.
The purpose of Drawing & Painting I-III is to enable students to develop basic through advanced perceptual, observational, and compositional skills necessary to communicate a range of subject matter, symbols, ideas, and concepts using knowledge of drawing and painting media, processes, and techniques.
Ceramics & Pottery I-IV
Students learn the foundations of working with clay including hand building and potters wheel techniques. Students also study the components of clay and the chemistry and components of glaze. A wide variety of open-ended projects provides artistic opportunities for self-expression. The historical development of pottery as a functional and art form is explored through research, replication art projects, and class room presentations to further develop speaking skills.
The purpose of this course is to enable students to recognize the properties, possibilities, and limitations of clay by creating functional and nonfunctional works of ceramics and pottery using basic through advanced skills as well as the historical aspects of pottery.
Photography I-II
These courses introduce photography as an art form and potentially a career. The curriculum covers the historical development of photography and photographic design as well as cultural influences of photography.
The course emphasizes the basics of exposing and processing of paper film in a darkroom. Students will create and design their own pinhole cameras with a wide-angle and normal-angle lens.
Students will work digitally to provide photographs of student life and campus events in conjunction with the yearbook staff. This course stresses appropriate processing techniques and safe use of photographic materials and equipment both traditionally and digitally.
AP 2D Art & Design
This course teaches the process of creating art according to the Advanced Placement curriculum of the College Board. A portfolio resulting from a semester-long sustained investigation of the student's choice is submitted and assessed by the College Board and assigned points (a grade) on a 1 to 5 scale. The student has the opportunity to earn college credit for this course depending on how high their portfolio score is. This course is step-by-step instruction in use of materials, creativity, the process of creation, and teaches different ways to brainstorm ideas. Juniors and Seniors who have taken art classes are eligible. Teacher recommendation is required.
